Span, Inc. offers a dynamic, supportive, team-oriented working environment dedicated to serving those who have been in prison. We are a private, non-profit agency established in 1976 that has provided services to over 9,000 ex-offenders. For over 30 years, Span has been assisting people who have been in prison to live healthy, responsible and self-directed lives.  Span specializes in handling the unique issues and needs of those who have been incarcerated and would like to live healthy, productive and independent lives. We believe that with the appropriate tools and the ability to use them wisely, people who have been in prison are able to change their lives.

We are currently hiring for two positions:

 

Full-time case manager for our Pathways to Employment (PTE) Initiative

Full-time Case Manager for our Pathways to Employment (PTE) Initiative  (posted 7/1/10)

Span, Inc. has an immediate opening for a full-time Case Manager for PTE.  Funded by the Department of Labor, Span’s PTE Initiative is a demonstration project operating in conjunction with the Department of Corrections, and provides employment assistance, work readiness training, mentoring, case management services, funding for educational programs, and GED assistance for eligible clients.  

The PTE Case Manager will conduct client intakes and assessments, develop service plans, assist clients to access treatment and supports, support the clients’ efforts to gain employment through job search and application, and gather and enter detailed data in several databases related to the client’s program participation.

NOTE:  This position will end on the last day of April 2011.

QUALIFICATIONS: This is not an entry-level position.  Qualified candidates will have:

BA in a related field strongly preferred. Two years of case management experience working with homeless adults may be substituted.

A demonstrated understanding and knowledge of the primary issues facing our clients, including substance abuse, homelessness, the criminal justice system, and the challenges facing individuals reintegrating after incarceration.  

Demonstrated ability to relate to and work with individuals from diverse socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds.

Demonstrated ability to utilize Windows based word processing, Email, and the Internet.   Access database experience helpful

Excellent interpersonal communication skills.

Ability to track and enter client participation data.

Ability to understand relevant Federal regulations and guidelines guiding program operation.

Ability to prioritize, meet deadlines, be a team player and maintain a sense of humor

Bi-lingual is helpful

Minimum of two years of sobriety

Valid drivers license.

Eligible to gain Department of Corrections clearance to enter prisons and jails (CORI clearance)

Must be available to work some evenings and Saturdays 

 COMPENSATION: Salary is in the mid- to higher- thirties depending upon experience.  Excellent benefits include generous vacation, holiday and sick time.

Full-time Prevention Counselor our Project Start program (posted 7/1/10)

Span, Inc. is seeking a Full-time Prevention Counselor for our Project Start Program.   The goal of Project Start is to assist people who have been in prison to reduce their risk of acquiring or transmitting HIV, STI’s, and hepatitis and to make a successful transition from prison to the neighborhoods of Boston.  Counselors go into correctional facilities to meet with clients three times before release to conduct comprehensive psychosocial and risk assessment, risk reduction planning, and transition planning.  Once clients are released and in the community, counselors meet with them four more times at a minimum to support clients in carrying out their transition plans, modify plans as needed, and make facilitated referrals.  In addition, Project Start counselors collaborate with staff from all of Span’s programs to provide a multi-faceted team approach to client services, network with outside providers, coordinate services with prisons, conduct presentations, do data entry and record keeping, and participate in agency projects as needed.  

Qualifications:  This is not an entry-level position.  Qualifications include counseling experience, understanding of HIV/STI/Hepatitis risk behaviors and the ability to communicate without judgment about sexual and drug use behaviors.  Experience/understanding of criminal justice, mental health issues, and the re-integration needs of releasing prisoners would be helpful.   The position requires strong skills in the following areas:  counseling, case management, team participation, ability to work independently, data entry, record keeping, and multi-tasking.  Must be able to obtain clearance to enter prisons. Must have a car and valid driver’s license.  College or advanced degree preferred.  Bi-lingual Spanish helpful.  40 hour work week with some evening (12-8) and occasional Saturdays. (9-4)

Compensation:  Mid-thirties.

Benefits: Excellent benefits, including 3 weeks vacation, (4 weeks after first year of employment) generous time off for holidays, sick days, and personal time. Health insurance includes Harvard Pilgrim (medical), Delta Dental (dental), life insurance and short-term disability.  Support for training on-site and off-site is provided.
